- Tumbling Dice
- Piece of Peace
An aggressive guitar opening is followed up by a scream from Yuusuke. He sounds really good in the verse changing his voice from a normal tone to a growly one. It’s evident that his vocals have improved since his HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR days, although his head voice is weak. The combination of metal guitars, Yuusuke’s growls and occasional synths make for a good song (that ending note is ug though). A powerful way to start the mini!
2. Tumbling Dice
After some repeated riffs, we get into a rap-metal verse. Yuusuke is rapping really fast and it sounds cool! Unfortunately after the great verse the chorus feels a bit boring. My favourite part of the song is the bridge/outro, the vocal gymnastics going on there remind me of various H&MC awesomeness.Very fun to listen to.
So more screaming starts the next song. The arrangement isn’t as interesting as the previous songs, but the chorus suffers from the same problem as Tumbling Dice. At least Yuusuke reaches some high notes to add interest. Basically not as good as the last two.
The title says it all. Yuusuke sounds seriously angry in this song, which is the heaviest of the mini. Rage does seem to have less structure than the other songs, with guitar solos (good ones) and instrumental parts thrown in, but I don’t find it detracts from the song. It ties with Hexagram as my favourite track.
5. Piece of Peace
The fifth track is the lone ballad of the release. The verse is softer and has a more bare while the chorus gains power and instrumentation, and the vocals are clean this time with only a hint of grit occasionally. While Yuusuke is better singer than he used to be, he still needs to improve his tone to add interest in a more vocal-oriented track like this. The arrangement is ok but nothing special.
Yeah again the chorus suffers because Yuusuke singing cleanly is lacking in interest. The arrangement of Progress has a slightly more pop feel than the other songs, and it’s nice to see a little piano. The yelping parts sound good as well. A solid way to end the mini.
SUN OF A STARVE is the group Yuusuke from High and Mighty Color formed after they broke up, and STARVE is their debut release. In general, I don’t like songs with too much growling. Well Yuusuke is an exception to that, I quite like his screaming. Starve was a good start from the group, for the most part the arrangements were good, the main problem was that Yuusuke needs to add more colour to his normal sounding voice. I would be interested in their next release, but they haven’t done anything for over a year and I think a few of their members left so dunno what’s happened to them.
